Avalanche Creek

In Alpine, Backpacking, Colorado, Fall, Summer
Capitol Peak

This trail follows Avalanche Creek up toward the base of Capitol Peak ending at Avalanche Lake. The trail is 11 miles gaining around 4,200′ of elevation along the way.  The first 2.5 miles climb steadily until you reach Hell Roaring Creek and its trailhead.  From there the trail descends back toward the creek and will mellow out for the next 5 miles.  After that the trail will become a strenuous climb for a couple of miles.  When things become less strenuous again Avalanche Lake is getting close.

The trail makes for a great alpine weekend expedition.  There are connections to a variety of other trails along the hike to make this trail worth coming back to.
